Libourne

Already 30 years since Fest'arts was established in the heart of Libourne, 30 years since it makes the city vibrate in summer, in August. An unmissable event, a popular and intergenerational festival, Fest'arts has earned its reputation in the French and European cultural landscape.

In the DNA of Fest'arts there are the historical genes of the traditional festivals of Logroño, Spain. In this twin town of Libourne, Gilbert Mitterrand, former mayor, is enthusiastic about this popular energy: "the party belongs to everyone and you are no longer just a spectator but an actor in your own party".

Under the impetus of Dominique Beyly, founder and former artistic director of the festival, the door to street arts then gradually opened on the streets of Libourne. According to him: "there was a real desire for freedom and to get out of the walls of the theatre", "to invest public places, to transform them, to ensure that the whole city takes over a collective project.

A real artistic shock was taking place in the heart of Libourne. The street, this space so familiar, could also be a place of meeting and cultural democratization.

In 1992, as part of “Libourne en fête”, a first day devoted to street arts made its appearance. In 1993, the name “Fest'arts” was given to this initially intimate event, then joining over the years the club of the biggest French festivals dedicated to the street arts.
