The 2022 cultural program (from June to November)

Located in Dordogne within the Community of Communes Castillon-Pujols, the village of Saint-Michel de Montaigne saw the birth of the great writer Michel de Montaigne. Very young, nourished by the landscapes of his childhood, he left his village to pursue a career as a magistrate in the Parliament of Bordeaux. He settled permanently in his seigniory from 1568, on the death of his father Pierre Eyquem, of whom he was the heir. In the entrance tower of his fortified house, he set up his Bookstore, rich with a thousand works and a place for the creation of trials from 1572 to 1592, the year of his death. The publications of trials in 1580 and then in 1588 sealed his fame in humanist Europe.

Today, the Nouvelle-Aquitaine Region, the Department of Gironde, the Department of Dordogne, the Community of Communes Castillon-Pujols, the commune of Saint-Michel-de-Montaigne, the University of Bordeaux Montaigne, the Library of Bordeaux, the National Federation of Writer's Houses join forces with the Mähler-Besse family, owner of the Château de Montaigne, to promote this heritage treasure.

The “Montaigne en mouvement” association is the result of a public/private partnership. Its ambition is to enhance the literary and built heritage of the famous author of trials, Michel de Montaigne.
