The Dordogne valley is classified Natura 2000.

It is therefore part of the European network of natural sites identified for the rarity or fragility of animal or plant species and their natural habitats. It contributes to the maintenance and restoration of biodiversity in Europe…
It has a remarkable biodiversity of plant and animal species on a national, European and global scale. Indeed, many threatened and rare species in other territories persist in the Dordogne valley and in particular around aquatic environments.

We can cite among these:

  • migrating fish (especially lamprey, sturgeon, salmon),
  • mammals (the European otter, the European mink),
  • birds (night heron, rock blackbird, bank swallows),
  • reptiles (the pond turtle), batrachians (agile frog),
  • molluscs (pearl mussel, large mussel),
  • insects (mercury agrion, succise checkerboard),
  • bats (horseshoe bats),
  • plants (estuary angelica, swimming flute).
